Quantum Works AGM

Friday, June 12th, 2009

I just got back from attending the Quantum Works Annual General Meeting in Toronto.  Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) was a very hot topic and the focus of several presentations.  QKD will likely be the first quantum computing technology to be applied in the real world.

There were presentations from Networks of Centers of Excellence and the Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation, in which collaboration between research institutes and industry players was discussed.

WaterlooCamp6

Sunday, June 7th, 2009

Dave and I presented at StartupCamp 6, going over the scenario where a system administrator goes rogue and alters files undetectably — and how our system detects them.

The questions & comments were good.  Thanks to everyone who came out.

Also presenting were (in no particular order):

  • Pager Duty from Toronto, who specialize in managing notifications. We were so impressed that we’re looking into integrating their product with ours.
  • NeverBored Studios with a cool iPhone game.
  • Kaimera Media with a video kiosk (burn a CD with video from an event while you wait).
  • ThinkPanda and Primal Fusion both tackled the problem of information management with Primal Fusion being the larger and more polished.
  • Giftah an online marketplace for buying and selling gift cards.

“I have your s**t! In my possession”

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

According to a claim at WikiLeaks, a hacker has taken “8,257,378 patient records and a total of 35,548,087 prescriptions” from the Virginia Health Professions Database (website is down).

Any intrusion should call the current records into question (we often talk about what could happen if a hacker changes your financial documents, but a bad prescription can kill).

The hacker claims:

Also, I made an encrypted backup and deleted the original.

However, according to the Washington Post:

Sandra Whitley Ryals, director of the Department of Health Professions, said in a statement Wednesday that the program’s computer system has been shut down since last Thursday’s breach, but all data was backed up and those files have been secured.

Agenda Camp

Sunday, March 29th, 2009

Dave and I were at AgendaCamp today. Some of the sessions were great, Omar from ProductWiki and Joseph from Lewis Media drove some good discussions.

Here’s Dave talking with the Minister of Research and Innovation, MPP John Wilkinson:

University of Waterloo WiCS Industry Luncheon

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

Today I attended the university of Waterloo Women in CS committee’s first industry luncheon, which they hope to make an annual event. The purpose of this event is for female graduate and undergraduate students in CS to meet with women from the industry and ask questions, get advice, network, etc. There were representatives from companies such as Google, Maplesoft, RIM and Open Text. In my opinion, the event was quite successful. The Women in CS committee plans to make this an annual event.

Events with us

Friday, February 27th, 2009

Dave and I were at Startup CampWaterloo on Wednesday. We didn’t get a chance to present since there was a helicopter demo, but eql=data looked great.

We’ll also be at DemoCamp Guelph on Wednesday, hopefully I can talk Dave into demoing.
